Trimming candle wick before first burn for clean flame

Crafting a high-quality candle takes far more than wax, a wick, and fragrance oil. At ÉLAN Home Fragrances, every candle is carefully tested to ensure a clean burn, strong scent throw, and long-lasting performance.

To get the most from your candle, follow these expert candle care tips.

Always read the safety information
Safety labels and information cards provide essential guidance on ingredients, correct use, and precautions. You’ll find this on the candle box, vessel base, or our website.

Trim the wick – even before the first burn
At ÉLAN Home Fragrances, each wick is expertly trimmed by hand before boxing to ensure optimal performance from the very first burn. Many mass-produced, machine-poured candles are supplied with significantly longer wicks, which is why trimming before lighting is always recommended.

Before lighting your candle for the first time, trim the wick to 5mm. This helps control the flame, reduces soot, and ensures an even, steady burn from the very beginning.

The first burn is crucial
Burn your candle for four hours on first light, or until the wax melts fully to the edges of the container. This creates an even melt pool and helps prevent candle tunnelling. Candles have a memory—get the first burn right and every burn after will perform better.

  • Whilst the candle is alight
If the wick starts leaning, gently use a wick dipping tool or a long-handled metal spoon to reposition it upright. This helps prevent an uneven melt pool and ensures a balanced burn.

Maintain your candle properly
Once cooled:

  • Remove debris from the wax surface
  • Trim the wick to 5mm before relighting to avoid smoke and soot

Wax on, wax off
A light wax residue on the vessel sides is normal and will melt away as the candle burns evenly.

With proper care, your luxury candle will burn cleaner, last longer, and fragrance your space beautifully.
